That's right, this 2004 action-adventure horror film was directed by Stephen Sommers after his massive hit with the Brendan Fraser-led The Mummy. After that success, Universal Studios threw open the monster vault as well as their checkbook, and the result was this mashup of James Bond, Universal Monsters, and swashbuckling adventure films.
Using CGI alongside practical sets and wirework, Sommers set out to make a blockbuster starring a young Hugh Jackman (entering his Wolverine era) and Kate Beckinsale, who was already beginning her own monster franchise, Underworld.
Van Helsing underperformed at the box office, and critics were underwhelmed. But we're firing up the projector in the Midnight Cinema to take another look at this curio.
